ED#102 : The Intel Core i7 Processor & Intel X58 Express Chipset Are Ready For Launch Rev. 1.1
03:29 AM MYT   |   Posted by: Dashken

Back in June, we leaked Intel’s desktop CPU and chipset roadmaps. They showed that the new Core i7 desktop processor (codenamed Bloomfield) and its chipset, the Intel X58 Express (codenamed Tylersburg) are scheduled to be launched sometime in Q4, 2008. Well, we are now in Q4, 2008!

Earlier today, we were informed by a source from a major motherboard manufacturer that the Intel Core i7 and the X58 Express are both ready for launch. In fact, this source was informed last month by both their HQ and an Intel representative to prepare for a launch very soon. If what our source says is correct, then the Intel Core i7 and X58 Express could be out as early as....

Western Digital 300GB VelociRaptor Hard Drive Review
03:03 AM MYT   |   Posted by: Dashken

Western Digital may be marketing their new VelociRaptor family of high-speed hard drives as enterprise-class hard drives but they are also very popular with hardware enthusiasts who just cannot resist their 10,000 RPM spindle speed. Everything just seems a little faster when you use a hard drive that spins at such a high speed.

To cater to this exclusive group of enthusiasts, Western Digital first introduced the Raptor and Raptor X hard drives with capacities of 36 GB to 150 GB. These Raptors have now evolved into the next-generation Western Digital VelociRaptor hard drives, that not only boast twice the storage capacity but also managed to do it in a much smaller 2.5" drive form factor!

Let’s find out just how much faster this drive is compared to the 10K RPM WD Raptor X and 7200 RPM hard drives!

Twitter A Tool For Thieves?
02:52 PM MYT   |   Posted by: Dashken

Some small alarms have been raised over the possibility that Twitter and social media like it could be used as information sources for those with nefarious purposes.

Picture this: You’re at Starbucks enjoying a half-and-half grande mocha, or whatever, and you thumb as much into your WiFi-connected PDA, updating Twitter of your current occupation. “At a global coffee chain, working on my novel, just so everybody can see that I’m working on my novel.” Bang. The bad guys know where you are and what you’re doing and rob your house. Or, bang. Your girlfriend’s husband shows up and clobbers you with your own MacBook Air. (more..)

Google launches Mail Goggles to save you from yourself
04:51 PM MYT   |   Posted by: Dashken

Just a quick post to mention a silly (or is it?) experiment that Google has released to the public: Mail Goggles. This feature is designed to prevent you from sending stupid e-mails in the small hours, when you’re most likely to be inebriated and at risk of making a complete idiot of yourself.

When enabled, Mail Goggles kicks in at the time you specify (default is between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. on Friday and Saturday), and throws five math problems up on the screen when you press "send." You have a limited period of time to solve them. If you can answer the questions, presumably you’re of mind sound enough to tell off your boss, or pour your heart out to your ex-lover. (More..)

ATI Radeon HD 4870 Overclocking Guide Rev. 3.0
03:05 AM MYT   |   Posted by: Dashken

As we saw in our review of the ASUS EAH4870 Radeon HD 4870 graphics card, the Radeon HD 4870 was very much superior to high-end graphics cards like the NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX+. It was also about 2-2.5X faster than its predecessor, the Radeon HD 3870. Now, that is what you call a quantum leap ahead in performance!

Of course, this does not mean we are not going to try overclocking the card. Even though the Radeon HD 4870 will handily tackle practically every 3D game out there, there is still a dragon left to slay and that dragon is called Crysis. The Radeon HD 4870 delivered an average frame rate of 38 fps at 1600 x 1200 and 32 fps at 1920 x 1200. Very good but it would be nice to have better frame rates, wouldn’t it? So, let’s see how well the Radeon HD 4870 overclocks!

Here are the latest updates in Revision 3.0 :-
- Added a new page on the RivaTuner utility.
- Added a new Overclocking Advantage page.
- Updated the results with Radeon HD 4870 overclocked to 855 MHz core and 1200 MHz memory.
